Dozens of legal growers and dispensaries in Denver were devastated after Federal Agents raided them, taking piles of plants and cartons of cannabis infused drinks just weeks ahead of the date that businesses were set to open their doors in Colorado to the public. The raids sent a message to recreational marijuana businesses that the Feds will be keeping a close eye on them. These are the first raids to happen after the U.S. Department of Justice declared that it would not interfere with Colorado’s new marijuana laws. The raids were conducted by members from the IRS, the DEA and Denver Authorities.

Retail marijuana sales are set to begin on Jan. 1 in Colorado, though not all municipalities will be ready to regulate sales by then. Currently, the state’s 500 or so dispensaries are only permitted to sell to individuals enrolled in the state’s medical marijuana program, but most businesses are preparing to convert to recreational sales.

Though the raids don’t necessarily mean that the Federal Government is going back on it’s word, they do indicate that there is still a large disconnect between the Feds and the majority of american’s who would like to see marijuana legalized.
